At Tropic Dental we conduct filling procedures to restore the shape and functionality of damaged teeth. Fillings are mainly used on teeth damaged by decay. Fillings, as the name suggests, involves filling up the tooth cavity left after the decayed material has been extracted with a suitable material. The fillings procedure is simple and quite straightforward.
The filling can be of different materials depending on the size of the cavity, as well as the cost of the material. Common materials are ceramic, porcelain, composite resin, silver, or gold. All these materials are biocompatible and will properly fuse with the tooth.
The Filling Procedure
The aim of a filling procedure is to fill up the cavity left after tooth decay, and ensure there are no spaces through which bacteria can enter. Our dentists will examine you carefully to determine whether you require fillings or any other procedure.
At times, if the decay has damaged the better part of the tooth, a crown or cap is a better option in order to strengthen the tooth. Also, if the decay has damaged the nerves, those nerves need to be treated first. You may have to undergo root canal therapy, which is basically the removal of the damaged nerve, or pulp. Capping attempts to repair the tooth.
Before any of these procedures are carried out, our dentist has to first carefully remove the decayed material and thoroughly clean the tooth. The tooth is disinfected to kill all bacteria that might be in it before any filling is done.
In most instances, the filling material is available in the form of a flexible putty. Our dentist will carefully put it into the cavity, and then use some form of radiation to harden it up. The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia, or sedation, to ensure you do not experience any pain or discomfort. Our dentist will explain the details of the procedure to you before commencing it.
Materials Used as Fillings
As mentioned above, fillings can be of different materials depending on various factors. The most dominant factor is always the cost of the material. Gold fillings are the most expensive. They are prepared to order in a laboratory. Gold fillings cope well with gum tissues and can last for over 20 years. It is the best filling material.
Composite resin fillings, on the other hand, are the cheapest option. This does not imply that they are ineffective though. Many people prefer them because they are quite easy to match the color of your teeth. They give your tooth a natural appearance, and people would not easily tell that you have fillings. Composite resin fillings are not very durable though. They can get stained easily, especially if you take coffee or smoke regularly.
Porcelain fillings are also prepared in a lab after an order has been placed. They are quite easy to match the color of your teeth and are more durable than composite resin fillings. Porcelain fillings can be just as expensive as gold fillings.
