Treatments for Sleep Apnea in AdultsDealing with sleep apnea is difficult. Without getting a good night's sleep, you may feel irritated, angry, unable to concentrate, and overall simply unhappy with how your days are going. Sleep apnea can also lead to other issues, including lowering your body's ability to fight off infection and increase your blood pressure. It can affect your oral health, too, by leading to dry mouth. This can result in more cavities, gingivitis, and other issues. How can you treat sleep apnea? It depends on the type of sleep apnea you have.

Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Treating your sleep apnea begins with diagnosis. If you have central sleep apnea, which is caused by your brain failing to send the correct signals to your lungs, you will have to work with a medical specialist. However, if you have obstructive sleep apnea, we can help. This type of sleep apnea occurs because the muscles of your throat or your tongue fall down over your airway, making it difficult or impossible to breath. To combat this, you could use a CPAP machine. However, those machines are loud and can be very uncomfortable to wear. Instead, we prefer the second option: using an oral device to prevent tissue from obstructing your airway.

These mouthpieces may be made to hold your tongue, keep tissue in place, or do both. It depends on what is blocking your airway. Your mouthpiece will be created from precise measurements of your mouth, so it will fit perfectly. While it may take a few nights to get used to wearing it, you will eventually find that sleeping with a mouthpiece is actually not as distracting or as uncomfortable as you expected. If you're dealing with sleep apnea and suspect a mouthpiece may be the right solution for you, give us a call to schedule a consultation right away.
