How to Brush Best if You Have Arthritis

Posted on 10/5/2020 by Tropic Dental
How to Brush Best if You Have ArthritisArthritis is when the joints become inflamed and usually occurs in people over the age of 40, although, it can affect a person at any age. With arthritis comes the difficulty of performing daily tasks, as some of the joints are weak and hurt when used. You may find it difficult to attend to your oral health, actions like brushing your teeth, flossing and cleaning your tongue. Fortunately, there are some little things you can do to make brushing your teeth easier, as neglecting your oral health can have damaging effects on the body.

Oral Hygiene Tips for People With Arthritis

Firstly, where you brush your teeth can help make a difference. Brushing your teeth does not have to be done in the bathroom. You can sit somewhere you find most comfortable and brush your teeth over a bowl of water. This can help relieve strain from the lower half of your body. You can rest your elbow if need be and just allow the wrist to move the toothbrush around the mouth. The toothbrush itself is important, as an electric one can be far easier to use. Electric toothbrushes are usually easier to grip, due to their size and material they are made from. They also do most of the work for you, as you only need to move it from tooth to tooth.

Instead of dental floss, use interdental brushes to clean in between the teeth. These are easier to use and can come with extra grips to make it easier to hold. Additionally, you can get a tongue cleaner to help remove debris from the tongue where bacteria can build up. Brushing your teeth with arthritis can be hard, but it is important not to neglect cleaning your teeth as you could develop tooth decay or gum disease.
